12/4/2023 0 Comments Yamaha montage c7I would say it’s right there with or a half step above the renowned CP4’s action. Pianos on the YC are only 4 good ones, but they compared very well with the Nord, so…. But in fairness I work out with dumbbells regularly, so it may be a coincidence. No straining my tennis elbow which I developed shortly after I acquired the Nord, and is now fading since I no longer play it. Just the right amount of weight for piano’s and EP’s, but VERY NICE with the organ. And Yamaha hit the SW action out of the park on this. In a/b’ing them, I was surprised that I couldn’t dial in any of the clarity, dynamics, or bark on the Nord. The dynamics alone make it so much more fun! You can really make it growl, howl, scream, bark, or go easy to make it just shimmer. It’s like playing an actual instrument -vs- a simulation. MAN OH MAN does this sing! The semi-weighted action is almost the same as the “weighted” action on theNord, which doesn’t bode well for Nord. I mean heck, I run the Nord through my Neo Ventilator anyway, so no big whoop that the Leslie is not great on the YC. Got it home, updated the software, and was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t even sure that I wanted it, but I figured for the price I could always resell and make a couple Bens. It’s nice to have it in one slick package, but I decided to go… with… It’s all just too expensive for what it is. They’re decent, and you can tweak them to get some good sounds, but the dynamics and feel is just not there. The action works fairly well for the organ, but the biggest thing I just could not adjust to were the EP’s. In fairness, I came from a Yamaha CP4, which has such great action and connection. I play mostly jazz piano, and I just couldn’t warm up to the lack of a tactile connection. I REALLY liked it at first, but the first thing I noticed was I was straining to make the action work. No carrying a keyboard stand, sheet music stand, all of that. The idea was a slick, easy, and self contained board for both home and gigging. The primary allure of it was that I bought the legs, music rest, and made a rolling case from a Pelican gun case. I had always wanted the Stage 3, and was SUPER excited, but it just didn’t work for me. So, after owning my Nord Stage 3 88 for six months, I decided to go a different direction.
